Upgrade Directions for LibreCMC VPN Mini Wireless Routers

To upgrade to a newer release of LibreCMC (but not anything newer than 1.4.9):

Note: These directions apply to updating to versions of libreCMC prior to the 1.5 release. To upgrade to libreCMC 1.5 please following these directions instead.

Please note: These directions on upgrading to the latest release of LibreCMC should not be used on the TPE-R1200 as it isn't clear which firmware/disk you are booting. The TPE-R1200 has two (nand and nor) images which need to be flashed. Mixing these up can brick the router. An updated set of directions for the TPE-R1200 are available here: https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/upgrading-nand-and-nor-firmwares-...

1. Connect your computer to the mini VPN router utilizing the included ethernet cable. Connect the one end to your computer's ethernet port. Connect the other end to the LAN port on your mini VPN router.

2. Open a browser, preferably Firefox, and go to (Chrome/Chromium will not work):

If you purchased the router without our VPN service then go to (unless you have otherwise changed it): https://192.168.10.1

If https://192.168.10.1 does not bring up your LibreCMC router you can reach it at https://192.168.3.1

Note: If you get an error message about an invalid security certificate or that the connection is untrusted you need to add an exception. Click I understand the risk and then click the add exception button.

3. Login

user name is: root
password is: none

4. Go to System > Backup / Flash Firmware

5. Under 'Flash new firmware image' section click the Browse button under 'Image:' and select the image you'd like to flash. Make sure the box 'Keep settings' is set to being checked.

The bin/ar71xx/librecmc-ar71xx-generic-tpe-r1100-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin (TPE-R1100 model) images are in the 1.4.8 ISO file below and is the last ThinkPenguin OEM release (directions for upgrading to future releases will be available elsewhere on the ThinkPenguin.com site under our support section and involve downloading using the "normal" librecmc.org images which don't come with OpenVPN and thus upgrades will require a few extra steps):

https://librecmc.org/librecmc/downloads/snapshots/oem/thinkpenguin/libre...

You will need to download the ISO and mount it or open it and extract the librecmc-ar71xx-generic-tpe-r1100-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin file (TPE-R1100). DO NOT UPLOAD THE .iso file to your router. You could end up destroying it. librecmc-ar71xx-generic-tpe-r1100-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin file is in the bin/ar71xx folder of .iso.

6. Click Flash Image button.

7. After 30 seconds or so the new image should be applied.

8. Unplug the ethernet cable from the computer and from the LAN port. Reconnect the one end to the WAN port on the mini VPN router and the other end to a LAN port on your main router or modem.

9. Unplug the power from the mini VPN router, wait a few seconds, and reconnect the power.

10. Give the mini VPN routers two minutes to start up and reconnect to the VPN (assuming you have a VPN configuration).

11. From your computer you can select the wireless access point called libreCMC-VPN (if you have a VPN configured as was default if purchased with VPN service from us). Alternatively you can connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the mini VPN's LAN port.

12. If you go to http://infosniper.net/ you will see a city that is not your own (again, only if you have VPN setup).
